BBC 1

The British Broadcasting Corporation's flagship analogue channel is the oldest television station in the world having started broadcasting in 1936. It offers a complete spectrum of entertainment, news and current affairs. There are no advertisements on BBC1 which is funded by a licence fee.

BBC 2

The British Broadcasting Corporation's second station began in 1967. BBC2 transmits to a smaller audience and many programs which eventually make it to BBC1 are first aired on BBC2. There are no advertisements on BBC2 which is funded by a licence fee.

Channel 4

Launched in 1982, Channel 4 is more of a programme publisher since it does not make any of its programmes. Whilst Channel 4 broadcasts a wide range of programmes it's particularly known for innovative comedy.

In addition to the two analogue terrestrial channels, the BBC also transmits the following channels via FreeView, cable and satellite: BBC3, BBC4, BBC News 24, BBC Parliament, CBBC & CBeebies.

Five

Formally known as Channel 5, Five was initially seen as a 'low-end' entertainment channel, but has recently been adding more mainstream content, particularly cult American television series.

Launched in 1955, ITV 1 (Independent Television) was the first commercial television station in the U.K. ITV 1 produce a wide variety of programmes punctuated with advertisements.
